Who we act for
Limited companies, partnerships and sole traders turning over up to roughly £2m.
How we charge
A fixed monthly fee set from your scope at onboarding, reviewed once a year.
How we work
Remote by default, with a scheduled review call each quarter and one before year end.
The practice year

What we run, and what we need from you

Every engagement is built around these windows. You will know which one is open, what has to reach us, and how long we hold the file before it goes back to you for approval.

Monthly

Bookkeeping review and payroll run

We reconcile the bank feed, clear suspense items and query anything unmatched, then run payroll and send payslips before the pay date. Bank statements and any paper receipts reach us by the fifth working day.

Quarterly

VAT return preparation and review call

We prepare the return, flag anything that looks misposted and walk you through it on a 30-minute call before submission. We hold the draft for two working days so you can confirm late invoices.

Pre-year-end planning meeting

The one meeting that changes your outcome rather than reporting it: expected profit, planned purchases, dividend and salary mix, and anything worth bringing forward or deferring while there is still time to act.

After year end

Statutory accounts and corporation tax return

Draft accounts within four weeks of a complete records handover, then a review call, then filing once you approve. Nothing is submitted in your name without written sign-off from you.

Final submissions for the closing tax year, employee year-end summaries, and updated tax codes and thresholds applied before the first pay run of the new year.

Personal tax returns

We ask for personal income details in September so returns are drafted and any payment figure is known months ahead of the deadline, not days before it.

Each engagement letter names your windows and the handover dates that go with them. If a date is going to slip on our side, you hear it from us first.

Scope

Six lanes of work, priced as one monthly fee

Most clients take the first four. Add the others when the business needs them — we re-scope the fee rather than invoice surprises.

01

Year-end accounts

Statutory accounts prepared from your records, with a plain-language summary of what the numbers say about the year.

  • Accounts drafted for your review before filing
  • Corporation tax computation and return
  • Companies House and tax filings once approved
02

Bookkeeping

We keep the ledger current instead of rebuilding it in one long stretch after the year closes.

  • Bank and card reconciliation each month
  • Sales and purchase ledger maintained
  • Queries raised while you still remember the transaction
03

Payroll

Run for teams from one director upwards, including directors' salaries set alongside dividend planning.

  • Monthly or four-weekly runs with payslips issued
  • Starters, leavers and statutory pay handled
  • Pension submissions filed alongside the run
04

VAT

Scheme checks as well as returns — the right scheme is often worth more than the filing itself.

  • Quarterly returns prepared and reviewed with you
  • Flat rate, cash and standard scheme comparison
  • Registration or deregistration when thresholds move
05

Personal tax

For directors, sole traders and landlords whose personal position follows from the business.

  • Self-assessment returns prepared each autumn
  • Dividend, salary and pension contribution mix
  • Rental and side-income reporting
06

Management reporting

For owners making hiring, pricing or borrowing decisions who need numbers between year ends.

  • Quarterly profit, margin and cash summary
  • Rolling cash-flow view for the next two quarters
  • Figures packaged for lenders or funders on request
Handwritten figures in an open notebook beside a laptop on a wooden desk.
Working papers stay with one named accountant from handover through to filing.

How an engagement actually runs

Switching accountants takes about an hour of your time. Here is the whole sequence, including the part most people worry about.

  1. 01

    Discovery call

Thirty minutes on your structure, records, deadlines and what has been frustrating you. We say plainly whether we are the right practice for it.

  2. 02

    Scope and fixed fee

You get a written scope, the monthly fee it carries, and the calendar windows that apply to you. Nothing starts until you accept it.

  3. 03

    Handover

We write to your previous accountant for records and register as your agent. You send whatever you hold — a shoebox is a starting point, not a problem.

  4. 04

    First close and review

We work the first period, tell you what we found and fixed, then settle into the calendar with a standing quarterly call.

Before you enquire

Where we help, and where we would point you elsewhere

A small practice works best when the fit is honest. Read both columns before booking a call.

A good fit when

  • You run an owner-managed company, partnership or trade and want one accountant who knows the file
  • You would rather plan before year end than receive a tax figure after it
  • Your records are digital, paper, or an honest mixture of both
  • You want payroll, VAT and accounts held by the same practice
  • You are switching mid-year and need someone to handle the handover

Probably not us

  • Groups, consolidations or businesses requiring a statutory audit
  • Listed companies or regulated financial-services reporting
  • Insolvency, formal restructuring or disputed investigations
  • Very large payrolls — beyond about fifty employees we would be doing you a disservice
  • Work where the only brief is to file something as cheaply as possible

Not sure which column you sit in? Say so in the enquiry and we will tell you on the call, at no cost either way.

Straight answers

Questions clients ask before switching

The six that come up on nearly every discovery call.

Can I move mid-year, or should I wait for year end?

Mid-year is usually fine and often better — it means we see the current period while it is still fixable. We pick up from your last completed accounts, request the working papers we need, and agree who is finishing any return already in progress so nothing falls between the two practices.

What if my records are behind or partly on paper?

Very common, and it is the first thing we sort out. We agree a catch-up period as a one-off piece of work with its own fixed price, separate from the monthly fee, so you know the cost of getting current before we begin. Scanned images, spreadsheets and bags of receipts are all workable.

How is the fee set, and what makes it change?

It is based on scope: which lanes you take, transaction volume, number of people on payroll and whether personal returns are included. We review it once a year, and mid-year only if scope genuinely changes — you take on staff, register for VAT, add an entity. Work outside the scope is quoted before we start it, never added afterwards.

Who will actually be doing my work?

One named accountant owns your file and attends your calls, supported by the bookkeeping team for reconciliation work. You are not routed through a general inbox, and you are told in advance if your named contact is on leave during one of your windows.

What happens if I miss a handover date?

We chase once, then tell you exactly what the delay costs in terms of the filing date and any interest or penalty exposure, so it is a decision rather than a surprise. If a statutory deadline is genuinely at risk we say so in writing while there is still time to act.

How do I leave if it is not working?

One month's notice, no exit fee. We release your records and respond to your new accountant's professional clearance request promptly. Your data belongs to you, and we would rather you left cleanly than stayed reluctantly.

Tell us where the business stands

Enough detail to make the first call useful. We reply with two or three suggested times and a short note on what to have to hand.

Please leave out bank details or identification numbers — we collect those securely once an engagement is agreed.

We use what you send here to prepare for the call and for nothing else.
